THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 7 Keep y6ur Coo R V he comfort of central air conditioning is undeniable. Today‘s consumer should be aware, however, that there are many factors, beside comfort, E _ which should be considered with the purchase of a central air conditionâ€" ing system. These factors include the sound level of the outdoor equipment, electrical dperating costs, cost of servicing, and the compatibility of this equipment with the environment. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind when considering purchase options 1. Choose the Right Size of System for Your Home In order to achieve comfortable cooling and dehumidification, the system must be correctly sized. The size of central air conditioning systems is measured in tons (1 ton = 12,000 BTU/HRO. The unit "ton" originated many years ago and is based on the amount of ice required to achieve the required cooling. the following is a rule of thumb guideline for sizing residential systems. Size of Central House size Air System 1,000â€"1,500 sq. ft. 1 1/2 Ton 1,500â€"2,000 sq. ft. 2 Ton 2,000â€"2,500 sq. ft. 2 1/2 Ton 2,500â€"3,000 sq. ft. 3 Ton Keep in mind that this is only a guideline and that skylights, type of insulaâ€" tion, the number and size of south facing windows, protective shade trees, etc. can significantly effect the size of system required. Your contractor will make the proper recommendation during the site inspection. another factor that the contractor must consider is whether the duct system and furnace fan have the ability to handle the air flow needed for central air conditioning. Alterations may be needed. Again the contractor will make the correct recommendation here. 2. Pick a Unit that is Inexpensive to Operate Almost all central air conditioning equipment is relatively inexpensive to operate in Ontario. A system needed to cool a 1,500 sq. ft. (139 sq. m.) home (2 ton system) would cost approximately $150 per year @ 7.6¢ per KWH. Fall C221 s Wallpaper Book Orders . S.E.E.R. stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio and the higher the number the more efficient the equipment. A S.E.E.R. value of 9 has been set as a minimum Ontario performance standard. some manufacturers offer equipment with S.E.E.R. values of 10, 11 or higher. an increase in S.E.E.R. value from 9 to 10 represents an increase in efficienâ€" cy of approximately 11% and a reduction in operating cost of approximately 11%. For a homeowner, in southern Ontario, with a 2 ton system ($150 seasonal electric cost) this would represent a saving of $16.50 per year. 3.Choose a Unit That is Quiet Certain brands are substantially quieter than others and you don‘t want an angry neighbor calling to complain about the noise. Features to look for which contribute to quiet operation are: * A two speed fan on the outdoor unit to efficiently expel heat at lower rpm‘s (revolutions per minute). Filmed record of valuables can save you grief A new and unique service is now being offered to the public through a Canadian owned company called Infographic L. D. This service involves videotaping a home or office and their contents for the purposes of future identification in case of fire or theft. The exterior, interior and contents of the property are filmed, model and serial numbers are recorded and specific items are engraved or invisibly marked. The client is provided with a complete package that contains videotape, photographs, valuables listings and window security decals. Without a record of property and valuables, stolen property can rarely be returned to the owner. A videotaped package ensures that nothing is forâ€" gotten following theft or property damage. Detailed listings provide proof of ownership to insurance companies and police ensuring the timely recovâ€" ery of property or replacement costs Z4 {0}Ke]):§ * Symphony Shades * Heritage Woods * Pleated Shades * 1" Minis $ *1/2" Micros. A value of 7.6 BELS has been set as an Ontario perforâ€" mance standard. These BEL ratings can be used to compare one brand to another. A rating of 7.2 or lower is exceptionally quiet and above 7.8 is usually unacceptable to most municipalities. Proper location of the outdoor unit will also have a big affect on noise level. Avoid locating the unit between two housâ€" es (less than 15 feet 4.6m apart), avoid car ports, avoid alcoves where two brick walls meet at right angles. If the above locations can not be avoided, a 5‘ (1.5m) high fence, solid wood or concrete, will reduce the sound transmitted to neighbors 4. Look for a Rugged Design There are a number of features which can contribute to long, reliable equipâ€" ment life, and these are as follows * A factory sealed refrigerant system installed with precharged lines and quick connect fittings. This type of system prevents leakage of refrigerant and prevents system contamination by water or dirt which may occur in systems which use soldered fittings. * A low ambient cutout switch turns off the compressor when outdoor temâ€" peratures fall below 5°F/13°C. Central air conditioning can generally not be used at Thanksgiving or Christmas regardless of how hot it becomes inside. Accidental start up could significantly damage the equipment. * To ensure that the outdoor unit remains attractive year after year, look for viny] coated grilles, polyester paint and corrosion resistant screws. 5. Choose Equipment that is Easy to Service If a unit is hard to work with, you‘re eventually going to pay a serviceman for extra time. Be sure to ask your contractor about this point. o INFOGRAPHIC LD.
