Since June, the Steering Committee has been hard at work planning and preparing for an even bigger and better event this year. Teams Captains old and new are invited to find out what's new for 2007 at the Relay For Life Kick Off event on Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Appleby College's Willis Hall in Powell's House. At Kick Off, Team Captains will have the chance to register their team of 10 for the event, choose their "prime" tent spot for the night long festivities, purchase luminaries, and much more. The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is a community celebration of survival, a tribute to the lives of loved ones and a night of fun, friendship a n d fundraising to beat cancer. It's an inspiring event that involves teams of ten or more people participating in an overnight non-competitive relay. Participants take turns walking, running or strolling around a track. The Relay For Life in Oakville is scheduled to take place Friday, June 1 at 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 2 at Appleby College. 2007 marks the sixth anniversary for the event. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, almost 40 per cent of Canadians will develop heart disease or stroke over their lifetime. Members of the public are invited to attend the seminar Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at Southside Community Church. Dr. Daniel Sapir, a Nephrologist on Active Staff at Halton Healthcare Services will be presenting. Participants will learn the causes and consequences of hypertension, who is at risk for developing it, the prevention and control through healthy lifestyle choices and medical treatments. Hypertension is an insidious disease presenting few symptoms, if any, but causing serious complications. That is why it has been nicknamed the `silent killer'. Hypertension affects one in five Canadians, and almost half of hypertension sufferers do not know they are affected. Uncontrolled hypertension can damage your arteries and cause serious physical complication such as heart failure, angina, heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. There are a number of risk factors that can increase risk of developing hypertension. With proper diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure, you can cut your risk of stroke by up to 40 per cent and heart attack by up to 25 per cent.
