www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 15, 2007 - 37 Preparing to hog the spotlight Continued from page 36 of their lives. For McCabe-Bennett, watching the changes that students go through is one of the most rewarding parts about being an instructor with the camp. "You will see a kid who on day one, had maybe never set foot on a stage before, or they had done one or two little things and they are kind of shy," said McCabe-Bennett. "By the end, they are coming up with one liners and getting huge laughs, and hogging the spotlight and they're helping other kids, doing things together." According to Mustafa, the success of the program comes from the teaching approach that mixes application and knowledge to give students a well-rounded experience, which concludes with a trip to Stratford Festival to see a production. "It's a really good balance," said Mustafa. "If you want to put it in grown-up terms, it's theory and practical. Even when they are learning theory, it's not just them sitting there and hearing us talk. We get up and do it, we get up and show them, show the possibilities of what can happen. Not only do they get to hear it and get to do it, but then when we go to Stratford, they get to see what the possibilities are." Along with the two-week camps, West End also offers a one-week half-day camp for children aged four to six. Like its two-week counterpart, the half-day camp also runs four times over the course of the summer. With both the half-day and full-day camps, and the amount of returning students, it's not unusual for staff to bond with the kids as they see them grow over the years. "Some kids have been coming since they were seven, eight, nine and now they are 14, 15 and 16," said Mustafa. "And that's really weird to see. It really is amazing. It's a good experience." Sessions for both levels begin in July and interested parties are encouraged to register early as the sessions fill up quickly. More information on the drama camp can be found at www.westendstudiotheatre.com or by calling West End directly at 905-8459378.
