A new Oakville-based group is taking a stand against identity theft by holding a meeting to educate the public. The group, which calls itself, People for Fairness in Life is angry about the lack of government action taken against the identity theft issue, which it says has touched 25 per cent of all Canadians in one way or another. They are further angered because the measures, it says, government departments, agencies, banks, information technology companies and hospitals have taken against identity theft do not protect the average person. "They're concerned for their own protection, so they ask us to sign legal agreements packed with legalese which traps us into holding them harmless against risks out of our control," said Dr. Gordon Atherley, the cofounder of People for Fairness in Life, who will speak at the seminar along with Oakville NDP candidate Tony Crawford and Pre-Paid Legal Independent Associate Yvette Thakurdial. Joel Alleyne, Executive Director of the Canadian Healthcare Antifraud Association will chair the meeting, which will be moderated by the Toronto Sun's Rob Lamberti. The speakers will explain the threat of identity theft and fraud in healthcare and the finance industry and discuss legal services for seniors, minorities, workers and families.
