www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 21, 2007 - 21 United Way is looking for everyday heroes to reach goal United Way is about people. For more than 50 years, the organization has raised funds to ensure that people living and working in Oakville have access to a thriving health and social service network. However, none of this work would be possible without the dedication of hundreds of businesses, organizations and individuals that support United Way of Oakville each year true heroes in our community. Chris Clapham, sustainable transportation program paign co-ordinator, spearheading the project for the last two years. "When I first got involved with United Way I had no idea the far-reaching nature of the programs and agencies the organization funds. Whether it's a service for lonely seniors or support for people with mental illness, we are all affected," he says. "I find it very rewarding to see the understanding on a co-worker's face when they realize the impact of United Way." More than 800 employees at the Town of Oakville participated in last year's fundraising campaign for the Town of Oakville raising in excess of $56,000. This year, Clapham hopes to increase both the amount raised and the number of employees participating and has planned a number of events to help meet that goal. The Town of Oakville will kick off its campaign at a Hero's Café on Tuesday, Sept. 25 featuring six Oakville food vendors offering a selection of lunch fare. Tickets for lunch cost $7. Employees will also have the opportunity to participate in a bus tour to visit three United Way-funded agencies on Thursday, Sept. 27. "Awareness is key," Clapham continues. "When people see the impact of these agencies, making a donation or volunteering their time just makes sense." In 2007, United Way of Oakville seeks to invest $2.25 million in more than 30 local health and social service agencies focusing on four key priorities, including strengthening families, supporting independence and well-being in seniors, supporting those in crisis and promoting self-sufficiency in individuals. This balance allows United Way to help maintain the ongoing health of Oakville, and to provide support to those in the greatest need.
