www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 16, 2007 - 9 Salvation Army still in need of toy depot With less than a month until their deadline, Oakville's Salvation Army has yet to find the appropriate office space needed for its annual toys for tots drive. In recent years the charity organization has used donated space to construct a kind of store at which those in need can come and choose a donated holiday gift for their children. "The purpose of this Christmas store is to make people feel like they're getting a hand up and not a handout," said Bev Gardner, Oakville Salvation Army spokesperson. "We want to make people feel like they're in a shopping mall shopping for their children. This way they get to choose something their kids will like, instead of us just showing up at their house with a Christmas hamper and wrapped toys." Bev Gardner, Salvation Army Oakville This year the space needed to make such a miracle happen has yet to materialize. As such Gardner is continuing to appeal to the public for a suitable space, even a warehouse, which the Oakville Salvation Army can use from Dec. 1 to Dec. 22. Gardner says the donated space must also be on a bus route as many of the people who will make use of the toys for tots service depend on buses for transportation. "I'd really love for someone to call and contribute a spot for us," said Gardner. "I know it's asking a lot." While a few calls have come in, the spaces offered so far have been either too small or were lost when someone else offered to pay for them. "I can understand that because money is important to people who are looking to fill up these spaces," said Gardner. The Oakville Salvation Army needs to have this space by Dec. 1, so it can have the store constructed and ready for opening to the public on Dec. 10. "If worse comes to worse we'll probably just have to use the church, but we don't want to do that because there's not enough space," said Gardner. "We're still hoping and praying for a miracle."
