28 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 14, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Census data supports growth woes: Region New census data from Statistics Canada underscores how Halton's current resources will continue to be stretched as the population grows, according to the Region. The statistics, released last week, show that Halton's population has grown substantially. While the influx of people may confirm that Halton is seen as a desirable place to live, it also helps illustrate the increased services and infrastructure required to meet provincial growth targets in the Province's Places to Grow plan, a press release from the Region states. "It is not surprising that Halton is regarded as a choice place to live in Ontario," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "But we need to work together now to protect what is important to us and to ensure our continued growth can be supported by sustainable infrastructure. That is why Sustainable Halton and the Fairness for Halton campaign are so important." The census shows Halton's overall population increased by 17 per cent between 2001 and 2006 to a total of 439,000. The new census release provides additional statistics on language, immigration, citizenship, mobility and migration. The Sustainable Halton planning process will determine Halton's needs when it comes to human services and transportation, water and waste management infrastructure needs to the year 2031 and beyond. The Fairness for Halton campaign addresses the fact the region can't accommodate the growth targets specified in the Places to Grow plan without significant funding for things like infrastructure.
