34 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 16, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Vytis 2 girls' team rolls to back-to-back tournament titles The Oakville Vytis 2 major bantam girls' basketball squad has steamrolled its competition at recent tournaments, winning all seven of its games to claim a pair of championships. SPORTSBRIEFS At the Welland Warriors tournament last month, the Vytis 2 squad defeated the Toronto Lords 49-17, Welland Warriors 35-18 and Oakville Venom 38-24 to reach the final, where it whipped Welland 34-8. Danielle Spice was the leading scorer in the gold-medal game, and Jennifer Sutton was named Oakville's most valuable player. Those winning ways continued at the Vytis 2 team's next tournament, the following weekend in Scarborough, although the victories came in much tighter fashion. Oakville defeated the Markham/Unionville Meteors 40-35, then edged the Russell Rockets 39-38 before again defeating Russell by one point (25-24) in the championship match. Alexandra Wilson led all Oakville scorers in the final, and Natalie Hirano took MVP honours. Other members of the under-14 team are Beka McRae, Claire Steckle, Kaitlin Walsh, Neha Sharma, Nina Dabic, Rebecca Flynn and Stephanie Anagnostou. Jeff McRae and Gord Hirano coach the team. Dolphins' Baillie surprise winner Jacqueline Baillie of the Dolphins Swim Club was a surprise winner at the central regional swimming championships last weekend. The 13-year-old Baillie was not favoured to win her 200-metre freestyle event, but reached the wall first to cap a successful weekend. Earlier at the meet, Baillie won silver in the 400m freestyle. Other Dolphins finalists included 10-year-old William Dixon (silver in 100m freestyle), 12year-old Kurt Schubert (bronze in 200m butterfly), 14-year-old Olivia Andersen (fifth in 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle) and 22-year-old Brooks Schubert (fifth in 200m freestyle). The Dolphins qualified two new swimmers for the provincial championships, scheduled for the end of this month. In other recent club news, senior national team member Colin Russell set a provincial record in the men's 200m short course freestyle at the Etobicoke Olympium.
