Chris Corbeil scored two goals and added an assist, leading the Blades to a 6-2 victory over the IceHawks and giving Oakville a 2-1 lead in the teams' Provincial Junior A Hockey League West Conference semifinal series. Game 4 is slated for tonight (Friday) in Milton, a 7:30 start. Milton had evened the series Tuesday with a 2-0 blanking of the Blades at Joshua's Creek Arenas. Corbeil said it was important for Oakville to get back on track Wednesday. "We saw this as a must-win game," he said. "After they took one in our barn, it was important that we came down here and stole one in theirs." Nick McParland also had a strong contest for the Blades, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal late in the first period and notching four assists. Dan Hunt, Geoff Guimond and Jeremy Welsh added tallies for the Blades, who had little trouble solving Milton goaltender Dillon Branco one night after being shut out. "Coming off that shutout, we had to break his confidence," McParland said. "Once a goalie gets confidence, it's really tough to get pucks by him. We know he's tough to beat on low shots so we started putting them up high." That's what McParland did on his marker, ripping a shot into the top corner from 15 feet out. Chris Haltigin (two), Luke Moodie, Dustin Alcock, Kellan Lain, Jeff Grenier and Welsh contributed helpers for Oakville. Scott Greenham turned aside 29 of 31 Milton shots. Six Hornets teams reach tourney finals Oakville Hornets squads reached the finals in five of the eight divisions contested at the girls' hockey organization's annual house league tournament last weekend. The Red Devils were the lone team to win tournament gold, however, downing the Black Cats 4-0 in an all-Oakville tyke final. Bayley McLaughlin led the way with two goals for the Red Devils, with Tara McInnis and Isabelle Hardy also finding the net. Sophia Lombardo and Sinead George had assists. Other members of the Red Devils are Kyleise Rolf von den Baumen, Paige Lester, Ashley Taciuk, Avery Proszek, Jennifer Schwichtenberg, Meghan Grouix, Michaela Purcell, Erin McPherson, Sarah Campbell, Sarah Da Silva and Hannah Rettinger. In novice play, the Oakville Teal Tornadoes dropped a 1-0 decision to the St. Catharines Spitfires in the championship game. The Teal Tornadoes won their pool in roundrobin competition, earning victories in all three of their games. Peewee action saw the Oakville White Ice Penguins win their first four games, including an elimination game against the Oakville Red Devils, before falling 2-0 to London Sport One in the final. Oakville Deloitte Thunder outscored its three bantam roundrobin opponents by a 12-1 margin, then downed Oshawa Crows Sports in an elimination game and the Brampton Canadettes in the semifinal. The Thunder's run came to an end with a 4-2 loss to the Mississauga Thunder in the goldmedal game, however. Alex Lincz and Alyson Schwichtenberg tallied for Oakville in the loss, with Samantha Turchyn picking up an assist. The other local finalist was CrocoBlue Dundee Wealth Management, winners of three round-robin games and two playoff matches. Woolwich Wild edged Wealth Management 1-0 in the midget final. This year's tournament attracted 134 teams from across Ontario and Quebec, the largest field in the event's history. Batchelor wins World Cup silver Local resident Jeff Batchelor won silver in men's halfpipe at a World Cup snowboarding competition in Japan last weekend. The World Cup medal was the second of Batchelor's snowboarding career. Last year, he won gold at a competition in South Korea. He nearly won gold again last weekend, finishing 1.1 points behind victory Kazuumi Fujita. Batchelor earned 41.1 points on his first run, while Fujita scored 42.2 points on his second run. "This is wonderful, even though I'm a little banged up," said Batchelor, who did not finish his second run. "When we got here this morning, I knew it was going to be a difficult day," he said of the snowstorm conditions. "It wasn't easy with the snow. But I'm from Ontario, so the conditions were familiar. Maybe that's why I did so well."
