Their big contribution will be their first-ever Residential Canvass Blitz Night on Wednesday, April 16. Students, faculty, parents and friends of the school will be taking part in a one-night blitz campaign of the Blakelock neighbourhood. Teams of two canvassers will be knocking on doors, and raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on April 16. A pizza party will be served for all blitz participants after the campaign. Oakville man facing sex charges An Oakville man, who teaches in Mississauga, is facing sex charges stemming from incidents at a Meadowvale elementary school some 30 years ago. Investigators from the Peel Regional Police Special Victims Unit arrested and charged the man with sex-related offences. The incidents are alleged to have occurred in 1978 at Shelter Bay Public School, where the man was a teacher. Cornelis Kersten, 55, of Oakville is charged with indecent assault on a male and gross indecency. He was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear April 7 in Ontario Court. Kersten is currently employed by the Peel District School Board as an occasional teacher. The Oakville Fire Department is calling on Oakville residents to take a few moments to remove snow from around the hydrants. This ensures they are visible and accessible to responding firefighters. "When a heavy snowfall occurs, we ask the community to help by clearing snow and ice away from fire hydrants near residential and business properties and assisting others to do the same," said the Oakville Fire Department's Public Education Officer, Michael Harrison. "Fire hydrants serve several homes or businesses in an area. We're asking neighbours to lend a helping hand to ensure the hydrants are clear of snow," Harrison explained. Residents of Halton who are elderly or are physically not able to clear hydrants near their property can call Halton Region at 905-825-6000 for assistance. This is a limited service to the community. Clear access to a fire hydrant can save precious time during an emergency. If a hydrant is buried, it can be difficult for firefighters to locate. Once located, firefighters then have to race to clear the snow and gain access to the hydrant while a fire continues to burn. These vital minutes are needed to bring a fire under control. The Oakville Fire Department asks residents to ensure hydrants are easily accessible and visible from the street.
