Canada qualified for the upcoming Olympic Summer Games with a 1-0 win over Mexico in Wednesday's semifinal of the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualification Tournament in Juarez, Mexico. The Olympic appearance will be the first in 24 years for a Canadian soccer team, and the first ever for a women's squad. Ancaster's Melissa Tancredi scored the only goal of the game against Mexico, and Erin McLeod posted the shutout -- her third consecutive clean sheet of the tournament. The United States will be CONCACAF's other representative at the Olympics. Lang, a St. Thomas Aquinas grad, and Matheson, an alumnus of White Oaks, are both long-time members of the Canadian team. Chetrat leads OAK at trials Zack Chetrat's impressive showing at last week's CN Olympic Swimming Trials has earned him a spot on a national senior development team designed to develop potential future Olympians. The Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) swimmer was sixth in the men's 200metre butterfly (and tops among 17year-old males) with a time of 2:02.79, qualifying him for the Canadian team that will compete in this summer's Tri Nations Cup against swimmers from France and England. Chetrat won gold in his age category in the 200m butterfly at international competitions in Geneva and Luxembourg earlier this year. OAK teammate Curtis Samuel also reached the 200m butterfly final at the Olympic trials, finishing seventh with a time of 2:03.53. The time made him eligible for Ontario carding as well as continued funding in the Quest For Gold program. OAK varsity swimmer Cameron Cummings, 19, qualified for the B final in the 400m individual medley, finishing 13th overall with a time of 4:34.37. The University of Toronto student recently won silver in the same event at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships. Kate Plyley, also a U of T student, concluded her 15-year competitive swimming career by racing in the 200m fly, 200m freestyle and 400m freestyle events. She holds numerous national age-group records, won medals at the provincial and national levels, and was an Ontario university team champion for four consecutive years. Youngsters Tera Van Beilen and Marni Oldershaw both got their first taste of the Olympic trials, with impressive results. VICTORIOUS VENOM: The Oakville bantam girls' AA Venom won the Blessed Sacrament basketball tournament recently. Bantam Venom smothers Saints It might not have been the most exciting game to watch, but the Oakville bantam girls' AA Venom couldn't care less. The Venom held the Tecumseh Saints to single digits in the championship game of the recent Blessed Sacrament basketball tournament, prevailing by an 18-8 score. The win capped off an undefeated showing by Oakville at the tournament. The Venom also defeated Ancaster Magic 41-28, Niagara Falls Red Raiders 28-18, Waterloo Wildhawks 44-24 and Blessed Sacrament 2 36-27. Members of the champion Venom are Rebecca Forbes, Alyssa Booth, Charlotte Walker, Morgan Caissie, Kristina Rajacic, Holly Rowe, Laura D'aurizio, Sabrina Glavota, Nicole Fernandes, Lydia Gibson, Marissa Weibe and Sera Smith. PLAY BA ER M ALL SUM Seven Hornets teams win LLFHL medals Seven of the 13 Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association rep teams won medals at the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League (LLFHL) championships, held last weekend in Vaughan. The atom AA club (coached by Lou Merrick) and the bantam A team (coached by Steve Chow) each won gold. The peewee A Hornets (coached by Stephen Abrahams and Jud Currie) earned silver, while the novice A (Dave McAllister), atom BB (Cathy Collier), atom B (Brian Morrow) and peewee B (George Hardy) squads each claimed bronze. The LLFHL includes teams from a wide geographic area, from Windsor to Kingston and Niagara Falls to Orillia. The league also includes a number of American teams, including clubs from Rochester and Buffalo, New York. In order to qualify for the league championship weekend, each team had to win its respective geographic division. All of the medal-winning Hornets squads, except for the bantam A club, will vie for more banners this weekend when they compete in the Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) provincial championships at various Mississauga, Brampton and Vaughan arenas.
