A report released earlier this month by the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) has found that Oakville sports some of the highest development charges in the GTA. The amount of the charges, which are used by the Town and the Region to cover growth-related capital costs, has sparked a demand for lower charges from both BILD and the Oakville Chamber of Commerce. Development charges are levied in order that municipalities can recover costs associated with the construction of roads, water and sewer infrastructure that is needed to service new development. Development charges are paid to the Region, the Town, GO Transit and the local school boards. According to the BILD report, the residential development charges issued by the Town of Oakville are the third highest in the GTA when it comes to a single family dwelling ($12,185), fifth highest for overall multiple dwelling units ($9,880), ninth highest for apartments with fewer than two bedrooms ($4,468) and third highest for apartments with two or more bedrooms ($7,751). When the municipal development charges are added to those charged by Halton Region, GO Transit and school boards, the total development charge for a single-family dwelling unit in Oakville rests at around $27,218. This places Oakville 13th on the list of 25 GTA municipalities in this category.
