Many drive right by West River Drive, located on the west side of the harbour, without realizing that one of the area's oldest buildings lies at the end of the street. Sovereign House is a hidden treasure that is worth scouting out, according to members of the Bronte Historical Society. "It is a little off the beaten track, so we're continually trying to find ways to promote it," explained Barbara Ann McAlpine, past president of the group and member for the last 12 years. "It is a special building that is an important part of this area's history." The Bronte Historical Society can be attributed with the building's existence today. When the property was slated for demolition in 1988, the group convinced the Town of its historical value and shelled out $35,000 to help cover the costs of moving it three quarters of a mile from Shoreline Drive to its current location on Town parkland. "People don't know a lot about the history of their community and buildings like this one help tell the story," McAlpine said. "You need to know your past to know where you are going." Sovereign House was built in 1846 by Charles Sovereign (1798-1885), the son of one of the area's early founders. The original site was a farm in those days, and the area was known as Trafalgar Township. Although he was raised on a farm, Charles was highly educated. He opened the area's first school in 1815 and later became the first local school inspector.
