The warning comes in the wake of a significant number of vehicle break-ins across the region in which visible expensive-looking property has been the target. Police said that while in some cases the culprits smashed the vehicle's windows to get at what they wanted in most incidents the thief's work was made easier by the vehicle simply being unlocked. The early morning and overnight hours have been the prime time for these break-ins, however, thieves have also been targeting the parking lots of restaurants, movie theatres and hotels where they know the vehicles will be left unattended for some time. So far the stolen items include cash, purses, compact discs, cell phones, GPS devices, laptops and sporting equipment. Police are asking area parents to keep a close eye on what their children bring home particularly if they are suddenly in possession of expensive items, like a laptop, which they normally can't afford. To stop these break-ins police are advising residents to: always lock your vehicle when leaving it unattended, never leave valuables in plain view within your vehicles interior, if you are going to leave valuables in a vehicle lock them in the trunk, report any suspicious activity immediately to the Halton Regional Police or call 911 if you feel a crime is in progress.
