www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 27, 2008 - 49 OAK wins regional title With 51 of its members recording at least one top-eight finish, the Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) easily won the team title at the recent Central Ontario Region Swimming Championships in Etobicoke. Thirty-one OAK swimmers combined to win a total of 62 medals -- 24 of those gold -- while the club showed its depth with 21 top-eight showings in relay competition. OAK finished with 991 points, bettering second-place Markham's total of 674. Peter Serles was OAK's top medal winner, collecting three gold, two silver and two bronze. John Steadman and Nicole Bullock each won five medals, with Julie Sinkovits and Karina Sils earning four apiece. Below is a breakdown of all OAK medal winners. Oakville defeated Peterborough 5-3 in the bronze-medal game. "I have been involved in lacrosse for 38 years and know this is an exciting achievement for the boys and for lacrosse in this town," said Hawks head coach Jason Donville. Oakville got goals in the tournament from Matthew Danner, Kevin Dobko, Mike Dobko, Michael Hickey, Nick Leshuk, Johnny Mastromarco, Matthew Milford, Nicholas Randell and Adam Wolf. Matthew Baranyai and Kyle Moniz supplied the Hawks with solid goaltending. Defensive contributions came from Matthew Di Lella, Jonathan Donville, Kyle Kolwich, Malcolm Prentice, Josh Rees, Matthew Thorn, Jaden Walcot and Jayden Wiggins. Jason Donville is assisted by John Dobko, Ron Milford, Steve Thorn and Wally Tymkiv. Mike Wolf is the team's statistician, and Jane Donville manages the club. The Hawks, winners of last year's Canada Day tournament in Calgary, now shift their focus to a tournament in B.C. next month as well as the provincial box lacrosse championships in August. The team was undefeated at the tournament, allowing only two goals in four games. Appleby to host U20 women's rugby Oakville's Appleby College has been selected to host the Under-20 Nations Cup women's rugby tournament next month. The inaugural competition will feature Canada, England and Wales. The three teams will all play each other in round-robin play, with the top two moving on to the championship match July 19. Each competing nation is presently in its first cycle with the new U20 age group, mirroring the developmental age categories in the men's game. The U20 Nations Cup in Canada will mark the first time England, Wales and Canada will compete in a U20 international tournament. The tournament is scheduled to begin July 11, when Wales takes on Canada.
