Volunteers are being sought to share information about safe and healthy food ideas with groups of all ages for a new initiative called the Community Food Advisor (CFA) program. "Many Halton residents have foodrelated skills and knowledge gained through cultural, occupational, education and family experiences," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "The Community Food Advisor program gives volunteers a wonderful opportunity to work with people and communicate information that can contribute to the well-being of residents in this community." The CFA program provides, through trained volunteers, reliable information and education that promotes safe and nutritious food selection, preparation and storage practices to consumers. People with an interest in helping others learn how to prepare healthy meals are encouraged to apply. Volunteers will receive free training through the fall and will be certified as CFAs able to work as volunteers with Halton residents and groups early in 2009. They will conduct workshops and cooking classes and host demonstrations and exhibits. Two community information sessions have been scheduled to provide details of the program and how to volunteer. They'll take place Monday, Aug. 18 from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 19 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. They'll both take place at the Halton Regional Centre, 1151 Bronte Rd., in Oakville. One side of the platform had tilted about 45 degrees leaving the two workers in a precarious position, but the Oakville Fire Department quickly arrived on the scene and successfully removed the men from the platform. "Our crews went up on the roof and lowered some harnesses down to them," said Deputy Chief Bob Sumak. "Then they just pulled them up onto the roof." An ambulance was on the scene, but no injuries were reported. An investigation by the Ministry of Labour into what went wrong with the platform is expected.
