Take Back The Night is an event that began in Germany in 1973 as a response to a series of sexual assaults, rapes and murders. Events and marches are now held internationally in all parts of the world and the message is the same: women and children have a right to be free from violence in their lives. Take Back the Night 2008 will be an inclusive, familyfriendly event since violence affects everyone. The free event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hopedale Mall at Rebecca Street and Third Line. It will kick off with children's crafts, face painting, an art exhibit, networking, community booths, entertainment and refreshments. An official program will begin at 7 p.m. featuring introductory remarks from organizers, dignitaries and keynote speaker Diane Lee-Clemons, soloist, humanitarian and cofounder of the Michael `Pinball' Clemons Foundation. The anti-violence march, for women and children only, will follow the speakers. In Canada, 51 per cent of Canadian women will experience at least one incident of sexual or physical violence in their lifetime, according to refugee women, women of colour, women with disabilities, Aboriginal women, and individuals from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities. "This is a not just a woman's issue. It is critical men and children attend this event and stand with women in saying violence against women will no longer be tolerated. Men can support Take Back the Night in so many ways, such as volunteering on the day, providing childcare during the march for their partners, and most importantly, by understanding that the anti-violence march is a symbolic march -- it is a chance for women to walk alone at night, feeling safe and empowered, without having to ask for male accompaniment," said Zehra Haffajee, SAVIS education co-ordinator. Numerous artists, including those from Kerr Village's Moonshine Café and Bronte Village's BellyUpBellyDance, will use their talent to assist in the event. "We know violence transcends the boundaries of race, ethnicity, religion, age, ability, class, sexual orientation and gender identity. Take Back The Night is an opportunity to highlight our diversity and to collectively say `No' to violence against women in our families and in our community," said Haffajee.
