Instead, it was Valley who was far away when the opportunity presented itself. "I was in Australia and I got an e-mail from Laura (Muddiman) saying there was a vacancy coming up and that I should apply," Valley said He had coached Muddiman in Grade 9 at Oakville Trafalgar High School, where he has assisted Jacquie Bale-Pece for several years. Muddiman had since moved on to Brock University, where the Badgers women's team was looking for a new coach after posting a 1-4 record in 2007. Four months later, Valley was the team's new head coach. And less than a year later, he was Ontario University Athletics coach of the year after leading Brock to a 3-1-1 season. "It was a bit of a surprise. As a first-year coach, you don't expect to go in and win something like this," said Valley, whose first-year goals had less to do with wins and losses. "Personally, I was hoping to get to the point that they looked forward to playing and that they would go into every game with a chance to win. I wanted to make them believe they could compete again." It didn't take long to do that as Brock won its opening game 3117 against Laurier. The Badgers lost just one game to the undefeated Western Mustangs and finished the year with two convincing shutouts, 22-0 over Waterloo and 62-0 against York. Despite not surrendering a try for the third straight game, Brock was edged 9-5 by McMaster in the OUA quarter-finals. Valley said he knew things would work out when he sat down with a few of the team's veterans and asked them what the team needed to succeed. "What they wanted and the things they said needed to change were perfectly aligned with what I wanted to do," he said. Valley said he didn't do things much differently than he did at Oakville Trafalgar, though he said there was much more to do -- running training camps, recruiting and administration -- at the university level. Though there was little age difference between the coach and his charges -- one of his players was actually older than him -- Valley said he made sure his players knew he expected them to take the games as seriously as he did. "I worked very hard and I think I definitely established that I was their coach, not their buddy," Valley said.
