OAKVILLE BEAVER Saturday, March 21, 2009 · 14 U17 Gunners open soccer season strong in Virginia Last year's Ontario Youth Soccer League under-16 champions have started the 2009 season on the right foot. The Oakville Gunners, who also won the Coupe de Quebec-Ontario Cup Championship and USA Cup Championship last season, kicked off the outdoor season last weekend in Virginia and posted two impressive victories at the Jefferson Cup tournament. The Gunners were denied a chance to win the tournament title, however, after the Jefferson Cup final was suspended due to heavy rainfall that left the field unplayable. Oakville opened the tournament with a 30 victory over Hoosiers FC, the secondranked team in Indiana. Lucas Andrade, Michael Tait and John Nardozzi scored for the Gunners in support of keeper Jonte More, who earned the shutout. The Gunners then blanked the hometown Richmond Strikers 2-0. Kris Karafilov amd Tait had the Oakville goals, while More and Brandon Galea-Andrews shared the shutout. Other members of the U17 Gunners are Sebastian Novais, Marco Natale, Sasha Radosevic, Alex Biafore, Jeremy Gaylor, C.J. Telford, Ricky Mammonis, Brandon Gregory, Russell Schaffer and Marshall Slipp. The Gunners will play a series of exhibition games in the Greater Toronto Area over the next few weeks in preparation for the prestigious Dallas Cup, scheduled for April 4.
