OAKVILLE BEAVER Saturday, March 28, 2009 · 14 4 OUT OF 5 PEOPLE WITH DIABETES DIE OF HEART DISEASE. Better your odds. Visit getserious.ca Cancer Society to come knocking The Canadian Cancer Society is gearing up for one of its major fundraising campaigns, the Residential Canvass, which takes place during Daffodil Month in April. Partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit this spring is RE/MAX Aboutowne which is helping to promote the urgent need for volunteers in the event. "The Residential Canvass campaign requires the help of hundreds of volunteers in order to make it successful", said Don Abma, the Residential Canvass campaign chair in Oakville. "I am very pleased that RE/MAX Aboutowne has agreed to help promote that need in our community." Abma says that in collected by knocking on doors," he said. "If we could increase our number of volunteer canvassers and cover even 400 additional routes bringing us up to 1,000 canvassed routes in Oakville, we would see a significant increase in the donations collected. Funds raised by canvassers help the society to fund vital research on all types of cancer and provide support services to people in our community who are living with cancer." Each route takes approximately two hours to complete and canvassers have the entire month of April to complete their assigned route. There are many ways members of the community can pitch in to help. One example is the canvassing "blitz nights," a one-night, one-time canvass of a local neighbourhood. Students from T.A. Blakelock High School and White Oaks Secondary School have blitz nights scheduled this April. The students, faculty and family from the respective high schools will canvass their local school community. "This kind of community spirit is contagious and we hope that it will inspire others to join in", said Abma. Augy Carnovale announced RE/MAX Aboutowne was also organizing a blitz night in April and encouraged other real estate offices to do the same. "I know that Don has been organizing members of our local real estate board to assist in the canvass for the past 10 years, said Carnovale. "We are very happy to help promote this important effort as Don leads the campaign this year."
