Making your camping trip kid-friendly! There are not many people who dislike the Great Outdoors, whether it be playing sports, barbecuing or just hanging around. Come vacation time, camping offers an ideal opportunity for families to enjoy the wilderness together. But, camping with kids is not something to be taken lightly. Just as adults can have difficulty adjusting to a few days without cell phone signals or e-mail messages, kids can have trouble without their creature comforts too. · First, only camp with kids who are ready and willing. Lodging in a tent differs drastically from sleeping in a hotel suite or a bedroom. If you force kids to go camping, it will only make the rest of the family miserable. · Once kids are ready and willing, prepare them for the campgrounds. Teach them how to pitch a tent and sleep in sleeping bags in the living room. Then, move the tent outdoors. Let them play with flashlights. Apply some bug spray on their arms. This way, they will know what to expect. · Camping is a chance for kids to explore the outdoors. But as an adult, you need to set some boundaries. Instruct kids that they can only leave the designated area with an adult. Tell them to be careful around bodies of water and that they shouldn't eat food they find in the wilderness, like berries or mushrooms. · No matter how many rules you set, kids are bound to disobey you. That's why it's important to teach them what to do if they get lost. Show them what park rangers look like. You can also put whistles around their necks that they can blow if they get lost. · Two things can make kids cranky -- boredom and hunger. Keep them happy by having plenty of food, drinks, toys and games on hand. For younger children, bring along one of the comforts of home, like a favorite doll, blanket or toy. · And of course, coming armed with marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers for some kid-adored s'mores as well as a few not-so-scary campfire stories can give children of all ages a vacation that they won't forget. 15 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, June 4, 2009 Childcare and Development Centres Ages 18 months to 10 years old.
