The Raiders fell 3-1 to the Lester B. Pearson Patriots in the senior girls' A/AA final, while the Titans dropped a 2-0 decision to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the junior boys' title match. Coverage of those games will appear in tomorrow's (Friday's) edition of The Oakville Beaver. Also, in rugby, the T.A. Blakelock Tigers were scheduled to take on the Christ the King Jaguars yesterday (Wednesday) in the Halton girls' rugby Division 2 final. Coverage of that contest, as well as last week's Loyola Hawks victory over the Aldershot Lions in the junior boys' Division 2 final, will appear in tomorrow's edition of the Beaver. MILTON -- The Nelson Lords senior girls' soccer team rolled past the Loyola Hawks 41 during the regular season en route to a first-place finish in the AAA division. This should have positioned the 7-0 Lords as the favourite to win the rematch in Tuesday's Halton final at Lion's Sports Park in Milton, right? Just one problem. Nobody told the Hawks. "I don't see this as redemption at all," said Hawks coach Sean Heaney, following his team's 2-0 victory Tuesday. "This is our third year in a row winning the Halton championships. We were at OFSAA (the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament) two years ago; we finished fourth at OFSAA last year and, based on our league system, Nelson finished first place so they get a chance to go to OFSAA. But redemption? No. We thought we had a really good squad from the beginning, so we weren't surprised we were in the finals." Loyola gained an early 1-0 advantage after midfielder Heather Novakowski finished a cross-field pass from Alana Boyczuk. The Lords had an opportunity to even the match late in the first half as Brynn Metherell had a clear breakaway, but could not beat Hawks goalkeeper Nicole Garcia. Nelson was given another chance to pull even at the beginning of the second half when a foul was committed inside the 18yard box, resulting in a penalty kick. Lindsay McDonald's ball beat Garcia, but found the crossbar and ricocheted away from the net. "She (McDonald) was one of our better penalty-takers and she's been on the mark every time this year, and this was the last game of the season for us, in the championships, and she missed it," said Nelson coach Bob Papadopoulos. "It was just one of those games where, I guess, the stars just weren't aligned for us."
