As well as our popular preschool programs, we offer many adult, teen and youth programs and events; something for all the family. Online iris registration for fall preschool programs -- many of which are free and fill up quickly -- begins Saturday, Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. Our preschool programs are held at every branch by our professional children's librarians, who share their passion for reading and fun with everyone. Join them for `Alphabet Soup,' `Family Storytime' and even some `Shake Rattle and Read.' If you are new to Oakville and Canada, check out our new `Welcome to Canada' drop-in program, a family story time with a twist where we share stories, songs and rhymes from many countries and have fun together. For our teen audience, we are holding our annual Write2Xpress Writing Contest which opens on Sept. 8. We invite teens from Oakville in Grades 7 to 12 to interpret an image and write a short story or graphic novel based on the image -- more details can be found at www.opl.on.ca under the teen section. Our free Teen Book Club, run by teens for teens, starts in October. This is a great place for teens to meet and share ideas. Kevin Sylvester, Canadian cartoonist and author, will present a cartooning workshop in October, teaching all the tricks every cartoonist needs to know. Public Library Week kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 18 with Oakville Public Library's Customer Appreciation Day. Come into your local branch and join us for a Starbucks, free giveaways and a $10 fine amnesty. Preschoolers will love our free Every Child Ready to Read First Concert with award-winning Canadian performer Chris McKhool on Oct. 19. HGTV's Disaster DIY host Bryan Baeumler will share his passion for building and renovation at our evening event on Oct. 19 at the Oakville Centre for Performing Arts. Both events are ticketed due to high demand, so make sure you drop by your local branch to pick some up. The new sessions of Adult Book Clubs begin in October for you to discover fascinat- ing books and participate in lively discussions. Led by professional librarians, the Oakville Public Library Book Clubs are open to anyone who loves to read and talk about the books they've read. They're also a great opportunity to expand your reading repertoire and meet new people. One of the most popular nights of the year, An Evening for Book Lovers' is held on Sept. 15. Whether you're looking for interesting books to read on your own, you host your own book club or you're planning to join the library's book club, this is the session for you. Our librarians present a variety of thought-provoking titles and afterwards the audience votes on the titles to be read by the library's Adult Book Club. Oakville Public Library's community partnership with Oakville Galleries and the Canadian War Museum will culminate in An Evening with Tim Cook on Oct. 1 at our Central Branch Auditorium. Critically acclaimed author of Shock Troops: Canadians Fighting the Great War 1917­1918 and this year's winner of the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-fiction, Cook regularly appears on TV and radio, providing his expertise on military history. This event is part of the Hometown Stories: Oakville Memories of War project.
