5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, August 13, 2009 Food banks plea for donations to stock shelves Continued from page 1 donations. Our shelves are rapidly becoming bare as the summer progresses and although our annual food drive is set for Oct. 17, that date is just too far off to wait for those who rely on our services to feed themselves and their family. The staples like cereals, rice, tuna, peanut butter ... just simply aren't there," said Aisha Chaney, community services co-ordinator for the Oakville Salvation Army. At Fareshare food bank, which operates in Unit 6 at 1240 Speers Rd., volunteer executive director Dudley Clarke was worried as early as last spring that Fareshare would hit a rough spot this summer. With the number of clients using the service skyrocketing and the economy continuing to flounder, Clarke was giving thought to what would happen if he had to stop giving out certain items. According to Clarke, while last Thursday saw one of the food bank's busiest days yet this year -- 86 clients shopped in the one day -- there is still food on the shelves. Usually, when Fareshare receives more food than it can use, it offers it to other area food banks, however, that hasn't been the situation so far this summer. Fareshare depends on its annual Easter and Thanksgiving food drives to carry it through the spring/summer and fall/winter seasons -- along with donations made in grocery stores and through financial donations for perishable items. Fareshare sees clients visit once monthly, qualifying for some 30 to 50 items. KSM offers its market in conjunction to numerous other services provided to those in need, primarily in the Kerr area. The Salvation Army turns no one away. While Fareshare is counting on its regular donations to continue, both KSM and the Salvation Army are appealing to the public for help. "We've been reaching out to the people who help us on a regular basis, but putting the word out to the community is great," said Chaney, indicating it's the staples that are most needed -- rice, peanut butter, tuna, cereals. KSM is also asking for contributions of a financial gift for food vouchers, or donations. Specifically needed are items including: baby food, infant formula, diapers, frozen juice, canned meats, canned vegetables, canned fruit, sugar, healthy cereal, nut-free Granola bars, pasta and pasta sauce. Donations can be dropped off at 484 Kerr St. Pickup of large quantities can be arranged through Deb Wach, KSM's family programs coordinator, at deb@kerrstreet.com or 905-8457485. As of mid-July, the food bank has been in desperate need of oil, rice, pasta sauce, sugar, juice boxes, canned veggies and peanut butter. It also needs snacks to provide those in its youth programs -- such as crackers, cheese, popcorn, fruit, veggies and dip and home-baked goods. Snacks can be dropped off at the office during office hours or by contacting Michelle Lockhart at 905-845-7485, ext. 237. You can even donate a portion of HBC Reward Points through the HBC Community Program to KSM in order to provide for purchase by KSM of items such as shampoo, toothpaste, diapers and toilet paper for families in need. To donate points, visit www.hbc.com/community Kerr Street Ministries HBC ID#9577954 Anyone wishing to donate to Fareshare can drop off donations at the food bank, in bins at local grocery stores or call Fareshare at 905847-3988. The Salvation Army Community Church of Oakville is located at 1225 Rebecca St. Its food bank is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. An appointment is needed to shop. Call 905-827-6523. Donations of non-perishable foods are welcome. Are You Happy With Your Smile? Enjoy your summer! y Before After 10 porcelain veneers and Zoom!® whitening DO YOU LIKE TO GOLF?
