OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 14, 2009 · 10 Letter to the editor Ferrone's dismissal shameful Re: Dan Ferrone terminated from the Y, Oakville Beaver, Aug. 5, 2009 The most outstanding and lovely recreation facility in Oakville, the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA has a huge dark cloud hanging over it after the firing of Oakville's newest CEO and president, Dan Ferrone, one of Oakville's most prominent and award-winning citizens. I did not know Dan personally until he introduced himself to me at 5:45 a.m. at the Y when I arrived for my morning session, very shortly after his appointment. During my research, I ran across many words from residents of Oakville to describe Dan: great man, man of integrity, team player, hard worker, trustworthy, successful entrepreneur, friendly and a great athlete. Ferrone, was making a great difference at our Y, for both members and staff. He was there each day to greet them by name and I saw him on several occasions, very early in the morning, looking over the equipment and facilities in preparation for the arrival of the members. His background in athletics, business and non-profit organizations was something that our facility was in need of. His work in the community included: the Special Olympics, Oakville Cancer Society, Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Big Brothers' Bowl for Millions, Rigatoni for Research Brain Child, United Way Bathtub Race, Oakville Relay for Life, Ian Anderson House, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Cystic Fibrosis, red Cross Black Ties and Golf Shoes, Oakville Crime Stoppers. Dan was an active Oakville volunteer with the following organizations and events: Oakville Mayor's Invitational Softball Tournament, Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education (DARE), Halton Trauma Centre -- helping to raise $30 million annually. With the Oakville Dream Home Lottery, Dan Ferrone was responsible for helping the licencing and budgeting and execution of an $800 million marketing plan. He helped raise $7.4 million for various charities in the Oakville area and helped secure more than $600 million in prizes. He was appointed to the Oakville Community Foundation, helping the endorsement fund grow from $6 million to $11 million, and helped the Rizutti family promote and organize Rigatoni for Research, which draws 500 attendees. Dan's great success in fundraising is most beneficial for the continued success and enhancement of our Y facility. I feel the decision by the board to remove Dan is a shame for the YMCA and the community of Oakville. In so doing, we have lost an active, envisioning, enthusiastic and personable man. Dan, you were chosen, according to the Oakville Beaver, from 100 applicants and we hope that you realize, Dan, that your supporters will do all they can to have you re-instated in the position as we feel that you were more than worthy and were the "best fit" for the position.
