The north Oakville high school, located at Upper Middle Road West and Nottinghill Gate, is getting a new artificial turf field and eight-lane rubber-surface track. Included in the $1.7-million project are plans for state-of-the-art field lighting. Construction on the track began on Aug. 17. It was intended to start at the beginning of July, but the school board wanted to ensure it had all the necessary permits from the Town of Oakville, said Giacomo Corbacio, superintendent facility management services with the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB). The board believed that the field lighting was included in the approval, and was surprised when informed that it did not have the green light to install the lighting, Corbacio said. "We're working with the Town of Oakville to come up with a resolution for this matter...," he said. "We've got confirmation that we can proceed and we are a bit surprised after consulting fully with the Town staff that now there's some question we need additional approval." Allan Elgar, Ward 4 councillor and member of the Town's Site Plan Committee, said that the HCDSB will have to submit a separate application for the lights. "They do need Site Plan approval for that work," he said. "They didn't ask at all for the lighting. They asked to redo the track, but nothing to do with the lighting." Residents and Town council said no to proposed field lights back in 1988. Elgar said he has heard from many residents in the neighbourhood who are opposed to the lights. "It is a huge issue for all of the existing residents who back onto the sports field," he said. "They are absolutely NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER See Public page 3 IN SEARCH OF A FOREVER HOME: Tia Starchuk, 4, cuddles her new kitty Sunshine at the Second Chance for Love Fall Adoption Weekend. While the Town's plans for the development of north Oakville may take around 25 years to implement, interest in them has already been sparked -- as evidenced by a wellattended open house last week. Around 20 residents showed up for a two-hour examination of diagrams outlining everything from the future community's design and transit to its extensive Natural Heritage System. The proposed north Oakville community is comprised of 3,100 hectares and is bounded by Dundas Street, Hwy. 407, Tremaine Road and Ninth Line. The design features 14 neighbourhoods, all with central locations where transit can be accessed. "Those centres will be the area where probably some of the higher density housing will be located, but other live/work opportunities may also be accommodated, maybe a coffee shop, if neighbourhoods are busy enough, it will be able to support other social spaces like day cares," said Anne McIlroy of Brook McIlroy-Pace Architects. "Schools will also be an important component of these neighbourhoods so children can walk to their schools -- primary or high school. The neighbourhoods are seen as places that can grow and develop as little villages with See People page 3 Lagostina Ticino non-stick frypans. Two-pack: 20 cm and 26 cm frypans. Sorry no rain checks.
