Ford plant idled by labour unrest in India The Oakville Ford Assembly Plant has been forced to cease production this week due to a violent labour disruption taking place in India. Ford Vice President of Public Affairs Lauren More noted that a strike at the India-based company Rico Auto Industries has cut off the Oakville plant's supply of transmission parts for the crossover vehicles Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, which the plant produces. The disruption leading up to this shutdown began at the Rico Auto Industries factory, located near New Deli, on Sept. 21, when many of the workers walked off the job to protest the suspension of several of their colleagues and to push for their right to form a labour union. The situation escalated on Oct. 18, when a worker was killed and many others were injured during a violent confrontation between strikers and an unknown group. Following this incident, the workers blockaded the plant, preventing its goods from being shipped. As a result of this blockade, the Oakville Assembly Plant's 3,000 workers were told, last week, not to report to work for the week of Oct. 26. It is uncertain whether they will return to work next week. "We're monitoring the situation and we continue to work with Rico to reduce the impact on our operations," said More. "We'll just have to see." The Ford employees will receive about 65 per cent of their regular salary during the shut down. 5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, October 28, 2009 KEEPING SENIORS INFORMED Our LivingW e l l Events are Open to the Public Monday, October 19th @ 3:30 p.m. Wine Tasting ...
