Ostrich wins again in Vegas Unlike most slot machine and blackjack players, members of the Ostrich (Oakville Super Talented Rejects Imitating Canadian Hockey) men's hockey team have no problems winning in Las Vegas. The team of oldtimers recently repeated as champions of the Las Vegas Hockey Classic tournament's 30-plus division, defeating a Vancouver team 6-1 in the final. Despite winning the championship last year in its inaugural appearance at the tournament, Ostrich made a few adjustments for this year's competition. Those moves paid off, according to team member Bruce Grant. "We decided to bring an additional forward line this year so that fatigue was not an issue," said Grant. "Many of us were suffering from minor injuries so the additional players were essential to our success." The team also flew down to Las Vegas a day earlier than last year to become better acclimated to the city and the change in elevation. As it did at last year's tournament, the team kept its shifts short and used a dumpand-chase style of hockey to put pressure on the opposition's defence. Members of the Ostrich have been playing pick-up hockey together every Thursday night at Maplegrove Arena since 1991.
