While he makes his owner, Susan Stokoe, smile every day -- next year, he'll make many more people smile as the cover pet of the 2010 S.A.L.T. -- Seniors and Law Enforcement Together -- calendar. He's also the July pet as he takes a dip in some cool, clean water. He and his owner won the recent S.A.L.T. calendar contest -- though the other dozen winning entries were all deemed so lovable that they were all named second-place finishers. Work on the calendar, which features Oliver and a dozen other local pets, began early this year when the S.A.L.T. team began working on the pet photo contest. By summer's end, the photos were in and judging, by local personalities such as Halton MP Lisa Raitt, was on. The result is now hot off the presses and making its way into the homes of local seniors. The calendar features not only the pet pics, but lots of useful information, tips and phone numbers for local seniors. S.A.L.T. has been around since 1992. It is an advisory council and action committee designed to be a liaison between seniors and local police. It has offices across Halton and it operates the Halton Seniors Helpline (at 1866-457-8252). Neither S.A.L.T. nor its helpline is a hotline to the police. Rather, both are about seniors helping one another -- and having a police resource an artist, who is to paint a portrait of Oliver as part of Susan's winning the calendar contest. Besides Oliver, the calendar features the following: Billie, the New Year's dog (January); Cheddar and Broccoli, two cats looking at a computer (February); Buttercup the guinea pig in a toy car (March); Dixie the bulldog in the shower (April); Toffee, cat hiding in the bushes (May); Jimmy Beddoe and friend, a parrot and a bird (June); Oliver (July); Rocket, a small dog going under a fence (August); Shelby, Bosco and Casey, a trio of cats watching a chipmunk through a window (September); Jackson kissing a cow (October); Mookie in a hockey net (November); Red, a parrot (December); Waggles, January 2011; and your pet space (February 2011) The calendars are being distributed by S.A.L.T. free of charge to seniors. Seniors can call the Halton Seniors Helpline 1-866-457-8252 to request a calendar for pickup at the closest seniors centre. Seniors can turn to the helpline or S.A.L.T. for information on seniors' services, to get pointed in the right direction to sort out a problem or to deal with issues such as physical, emotional, financial abuse or neglect. While S.A.L.T. tries to let seniors know about community resources and programs, police work with S.A.L.T. to reach seniors with their messages on safety and crime prevention. The calendar is a way to further disseminate that information into the community -- and get it right on the fridge of local seniors, right next to the cute pet photo. The calendar was the brainstorm of Oakville S.A.L.T. volunteer Silvie Atterbury,
