Talking Canada at 150 Local leaders to discuss the future Local community leaders will be at Sheridan College's Oakville campus this Saturday to discuss issues facing Halton Region in the coming years. The local event will run simultaneously with the Canada at 150: Rising to the Challenge conference in Montreal on Saturday, The Montreal conference is hosted by the federal Liberal Party leader Michael Ignatieff. Similar conferences, hosted by the Liberals, are being run across the country, including the Halton one. The aim of the local event is for Halton to take the steps necessary to have a prosperous, successful, and innovative Canada in 2017, when the nation turns 150. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a live webcast from the Montreal conference with an introduction from the local federal Liberal candidate Deborah Gillis. The live feed will be followed by a panel discussion from local business, organization and political leaders. Discussion topics will include issues affecting families such as retirement, pensions, health care, women's issues, inclusiveness, diversity and education. They will also speak about energy, the environment and the economy and how to balance those three areas, including future issues such as fresh water shortages and others. Speakers will also discuss how Canada can create a creative and competitive economy. The discussions are planned to go on until about 3 p.m. The event is open to the public. It takes place in the college's G Wing in room 404. The campus is located at 1430 Trafalgar Rd.
