Vol. 48 No. 41 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" 48 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Oakville nurses' salaries frozen By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER ON GUARD: This mother goose has built her nest beside the beer chute in Bronte at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 486, at 79 Jones St., and will not let Beer Store delivery staff anywhere near the nest. Mother goose detours beer delivery "The beer truck delivery guys will just have to suffer a little Those delivering beer to Bronte's extra work and haul the stuff Royal Canadian Legion Branch 486, downstairs if they want to make located at 79 Jones St., are having to their money." OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF By David Lea work a little harder thanks to a feathered visitor who needs her space. A female Canada goose has chosen to build her nest and lay her eggs right Rick Richarz, president Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 486 beside the Legion's beer chute and she is defending the area voraciously against any intruder with the help of her mate. This has caused a small problem as beer delivery personnel have not been able to access the chute for the last two weeks due to the firestorm of goose fury they provoke whenever they get too close. See Legion page 2 The 774 registered nurses at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) are now making less than registered nurses in other hospitals across Ontario thanks to a salary and benefits freeze implemented on public servants by the Province's 2010/2011 budget. The freeze, which is intended to help the provincial government erase its record $21.3 billion deficit by 2018, effects the salaries of all non-unionized nurses, freezing their salaries and benefits for two years with the exception of step increases. The government is honouring all existing collective agreements in the public sector and increases in these agreements are proceeding as planned for unionized employees. Bill 16, the portion of the budget dealing with this freeze, has yet to make it through its final reading in the Ontario Legislature, however, it is retroactive to March 24, when the budget was introduced. This means the salaries and benefits of affected employees in Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) have been frozen since then. The net result of all this is that the unionized nurses at the Georgetown Hospital received a three per cent increase to their salaries and benefits on April 1, while the 914 non-unionized nurses at OTMH and Milton District Hospital did not.
