"The parents are very caring. Their children are their priority and always have been," she said. "There's a lot of close friendships here. A lot of the students have been together since kindergarten. It's been such a happy enjoyable environment for the parents and staff." The school was built at a time when the community was quite young and Maple Grove could not accommodate the growing student population. Over the years, the school's population has fluctuated and reached more than 400 pupils and had up to six portables and has gone down to as few as 250, which is about the number it has today. It was named after Oakville's founder William Chisholm. The school council co-chair Maria Cruickshank, said this is an exciting time for students as many of them will be going to Maple Grove with children they see walking along the same streets to get to school. She added Chisholm had a school song in its early years which the current students are relearning. Also, sometime between 1978-82 a time capsule was buried somewhere on the school site. In the capsules are the names and contact information of the students at the time and their hopes and dreams written down. "When we interview alumni we have conflicting stories where that time capsule is," Cruickshank said. "We would like to extract that time capsule for our closing event with our children, but its really hard to know where it is and it requires, if it's by the flagpole, removal of some asphalt so it becomes a bit of excavation, so we want to know for sure." The school often ranked on top of the school board's EQAO provincial standardized testing and among the top in the province. The school wrapped up this school year with a fun day for its students and staff.
