Oakville Wards 5 & 6 trustee Bruce Jones surprised trustees and staff at the meeting by stepping down as board chair to run for Oakvilles municipal council. The board held two meetings that night. The first was a continuation from an unfin- ished July meeting and the second was its regular Aug. 25 meeting. During the communications from the chair at the end of the continued meeting, Jones began thanking staff and then said, Im stepping down as board chair to allow myself time to run for regional councilor for Ward 5. Afterwards, Jones calmly got off the chairs seat and walked over to a vacant trustees seat and the July meeting was adjourned. According to the Town of Oakvilles nom- ination registry, Jones only filed his nomina- tion papers earlier that day. The boards bylaws dictate a new chair must be chosen no later than the meeting following the one in which the chairs posi- tion becomes vacant. So when the next meeting started just minutes after Jones resignation, a new chair had to be selected. There were two nominations for Jones replacement Oakville Wards 1 & 2 trustee Don Vrooman and Halton Hills Wards 1 & 2 Gerry Ockenden. A ballot-box vote by the trustees selected Ockenden as the chair, a post he will keep until the end of this year. During a short break between the two meetings, Jones told the Oakville Beaver that he had confidence in the trustees to elect a successor. It was Jones, who nomi- nated Ockenden for the position. The really difficult thing I found about being chair is to shut up, Jones said of his nominee. Trustee Ockenden has found a way to represent his community very well and say very little and I think thats a good quality for a chair. Ockenden faces several challenges in the coming months. The Aug. 25 meeting was also the final meeting of outgoing Director of Education Wayne Joudrie, who is retiring. The next board meeting next month will be the first full meeting for both Ockenden and the incoming director David Euale.
