Nine-year Oakville resident John McLaughlin declared his candidacy for mayor last week, joining the race on the very last day candidacy papers could be filed. McLaughlin said he decided to run for mayor when he realized both of the main contenders, cur- rent Mayor Rob Burton and for- mer mayor Ann Mulvale, both raised property taxes during their time in power. Id actually like to reduce property taxes because raising them is unsustainable, said McLaughlin. If they are raised three per cent every year, Oakville will not be a place anyone can afford to live. McLaughlin said such a tax reduction can be accomplished by controlling the spending on the Towns capital and operating budgets. Essentially the Town should only be spending what it actually has, said McLaughlin. From my perspective the Town is overspending, he said. You have to look through all the Town departments, see what their proposed budgets and spend- ing initiatives are and bring them into line with your actual revenue, and when I say revenue I do not include raising property taxes as a form of revenue. In other words, if they dont have enough money to cover the spending, you dont raise property taxes and say youve got revenue to match the program. In addition to having issues with escalating property taxes, McLaughlin said he wants more environmental initiatives under- taken by the Town. I couldnt help but notice that I dont see any hybrid buses on the road or any hydrogen-powered or alternative energy vehicles from the Town, he said. Thats what Oakville needs. We need to be a leader in transporta- tion and alternative energy and that should start with the Towns fleet. When it comes to TransCanadas 900-megawatt gas- fired power plant proposed for the Ford-owned lands of 1500 Royal Windsor Dr., McLaughlin said the project should be stopped, so it can be determined if it would be a better source of energy than some form of alternative energy. On the issue of the $200 mil- lion local share commitment to the new Oakville hospital McLaughlin said that while he supports a new hospital, the issue needs to be revisited to ensure Oakville gets the most cost effec- tive hospital and services it can. He also voiced concerns about the hospital costing more than what has been forecast. If elected, McLaughlin has also pledged to try to introduce free busing for seniors and lower the amount of taxes businesses in Oakville pay to encourage more businesses and jobs to relocate to Oakville. McLaughlin is a family man with a wife and two daughters and is a former federal lawyer who is currently in the process of estab- lishing a practice in Oakville. McLaughlin running to rein in property tax hikes John McLaughlin Id actually like to reduce property taxes because raising them is unsustainable. Mayoral candidate John McLaughlin
