Blakelock High School students are trying to educate people about the affects of bullying and how a bystander can help. RIZIERO VERTOLLI / OAKVILLE BEAVER Standing up to bullies Glenburnie has talent show for kids OCC has busy schedule The Oakville Childrens Choirs (OCC) chamber and indigo youth choirs will be part of the start to the holiday season as they perform at the Christmas Tree Lighting at Town Square Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. This Saturday, the OCC is going back in time to the Stone Age in the Santa Claus Parade with a float called A Flintstone Christmas, and will stroll along the parade route starting in downtown Oakville with Fred and Wilma Flinstone. The parade runs from 9 to 11 a.m. On Saturday, Nov. 27 the choir members will sing and sell. The Christmas Carol Sing and Fundraiser will be at the Real Canadian Superstore on Oak Park Blvd. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. the OCC will be selling Christmas cookies and concert tickets, as well as performing. The tickets will be for the OCCs The Frosty Weather and Community Carol concerts, both of which take place in December. On Sunday, Nov. 28 the OCC will be doing guest work. Its intermediate choir will join the Mississauga Salvation Army Temple Band at The Gift of Christmas concerts at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. The schools annual Performing Arts Challenge Talent Contest takes place the morning of Saturday, Nov. 27. Children from across the region are invited to compete. The performances will be judged by a panel of profes- sionals in the entertainment industry on technical merit and artistic impression and will receive feedback. Instrumentalists, vocalists, dancers, and variety per- formers from all genres, styles, and backgrounds are invited to perform and compete for trophies and prizes, which include scholarships to Addison Music Learning Centre and Harmony Arts Academy. Artist honoured for her work Oakvilles Naoko Matsubara was recently honoured by her former university for her achievements as a printmaker and painter. The artist received an Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award from Pittsburghs Carnegie Mellon Universitys alumni association. Matsubara is a graduate of the schools college of fine arts in 1962. She is considered one of the world's foremost Japanese woodcut artists. Her work is exhibited at locations such as the White House, Boston Museum of Art, Royal Ontario Museum, British Museum and Tokyo Museum of Modern Art. She has donated numerous prints to Carnegie Mellon Universitys artis- tic properties collection and was named a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1981. The award presentation took place during the schools homecoming weekend Nov. 4-6.
