Not giving into the pressure of competing at the World Age Group Trampoline and Tumbling Championships for the first time, the Grade 9 Abbey Park student turned in her best scores of the season. Russell came within one- tenth of a point of advancing to the finals, finishing 10th in the girls 13-14 tumbling division at the recent championships in Metz, France. It was pretty amazing going to such a big competition and placing so well, the 14- year-old said. Next year Im hoping to make finals. Thats certainly not out of the question. Not only was Russell just one-tenth out of the finals, she was just two-tenths of a point out of sixth. She competed phenomenally, it was just a really tough group, said her Burlington B.G.s coach Denis Vachon. Debuting a new tumbling pass in competition, Russell scored a 30.300 on her first pass. Only four other competitors in the entire competition earned higher execution marks than her 26.30. Russell said that helped set- tle any nerves she may have been feeling and she followed that up by nearly matching her first score with a 30.200 on her second pass. Russell said the experience at worlds, where there were more than 2,000 people watching inside Les Arenes Sports Complex, should help her in the future. Basically, I just have to stay calm and do my routines like I always do them, she said. It was pretty amazing going to such a big competition and placing so well. Local tumbler Alicia Russell Tumbler cracks Top 10 at worlds Matt Prapavessis of Oakville has signed a let- ter of intent to play with Bemidji State University next season. The 6-foot-2 defenceman is playing for the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League, where he is the teams top scoring blue- liner with two goals and four assists. Prior to this season, Prapavessis played for the Mississauga Chargers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League for two years. He finished the 2009-10 season with 43 points in 49 games. He possesses a good ability to run the power play from the blue line and has the knack of cre- ating offense for his teammates whenever he has the puck, said Bemidji assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Ted Belisle. We are certainly excited about his poten- tial. Meanwhile, Mark McGowan of the Oakville Blades will join the RPI Engineers next season. McGowan has 13 goals and 12 assists for the Blades through 28 games this season. Panthers avenge loss to St. Patrick from last years team, and two of them hadnt played much at all, said Gowan. We had one starter back (Patrick Gamble). We had to work a lot on fundamen- tals. His team of rep hockey, basketball, football and soc- cer players quickly caught on to volleyball. The team went 5-2 in the regular season, then reached the semi- finals of the Oakville playdowns (losing to St. Vincent) before finishing first at the Halton qualifying tourna- ment. In the Halton champi- onships, the Panthers defeated St. Patrick and St. Bernadette to reach the final, where they avenged their previous losses to St. Vincent. St. Marguerite and St. Vincent split the first two sets before the Panthers rallied from a 13-11 deficit to win the tiebreaking set, 15-13. Gamble was in the right place at the right time for St. Marguerite, serving up the teams final three points to complete the comeback. Hes probably the best server in the board, Gowan said. It just happened that way with the rotation. It couldnt have been timed any better. Gowan is proud of the on-court progress of his team this year, but hes also pleased with the way the Panthers conducted themselves throughout the sea- son. They showed a lot of perseverance and were always positive, he said, adding that many coaches compli- mented his team this season for its sportsmanship. Dillon Rudman, Jack Jeffers, Michael Brzek, Jason Uleryk-Carvalho, Andrew Field, Robert Hudson, Rocky Iannaci, Rob Wilush, James Bertrand, Brendan Watada and Luca DAmico also contributed to this years championship. Hockey players sign with NCAA schools Alicia Russell Continued from page 37 They showed a lot of perseverance and were always positive. St. Marguerite dYouville coach Mark Gowan
