The event, which begins at 10:20 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School (2420 Sixth Line), will see 17 teams square off to see who has the best and most capable robot. The kids, who are participating, are between the ages of 9 and 14 and they have been teaming up with our team members and special mentors to produce robots, pretty much out of Lego, said Ali Africa, 17, of the Holy Trinity Tronic Titans. These robots are designed to carry out dif- ferent tasks and challenges. Some of these tasks include pushing certain objects to designated areas. The Tronic Titans have participated in the FIRST robotics competitions in the past win- ning the Rookie of the Year award during the Waterloo Regional Championships last year. This victory allowed them to advance to Atlanta, Georgia where they attended the FIRST World Championship Games. Africa talked about the rewarding process of building a robot with her team last year. It was hectic, she said. Its time consuming, but at the same time it keeps challenging you to keep going regardless of whether a battery breaks down or a bulb stops working. Overall its a great experience. It teach- es you things you wouldnt normally learn in a classroom. Africa said Saturdays event is important because it gives the children who are competing the opportunity to be innovative and creative and through the creation of the robot it also allows them to learn new and interesting things outside of school. Awards and closing ceremonies for the event take place at 3 p.m. Holy Trinity hosts FIRST Lego tournament An Oakville man is facing numerous charges after a vehicle was stopped for speeding in Burlingtons new HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lane Thursday. Police said at around 11:52 a.m. an OPP officer was driving westbound on the QEW near Appleby Line when he was passed by an SUV that was also travelling westbound, but in the new HOV lane. Police said the vehicle was traveling 150- kilometres in a 100-kilometre zone and the driver was the only person in the vehicle. Driving in the HOV lane requires two or more people to be in a vehicle. When signaled to stop, the SUV stopped right where it was, in the HOV lane, howev- er, the officer was able to direct the driver to move to a safer location. Oakville man charged with speeding in HOV lane The second annual Trees for Toys will give away free donated Christmas trees to the first 100 people bringing an unwrapped toy or gift on Saturday. The Hans Taal, Century 21 Miller event will take place at 467 Speers Rd. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year, Trees for Toys is focusing on teenagers ages 12 to 16 as often toy donations are made of items suitable for younger children who are easier to buy for. All toys donated will go to the 15th annual Salvation Army Toy Mountain campaign and will be distributed to Oakville and area teenagers. Guests will be able to visit with Santa Claus. There will also be face painting, entertainment and refresh- ments. The Salvation Army and Red Kettle Campaign will be on hand to help collect gifts and give away trees.
