GRAHAM PAINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER On your mark...OMLA ready to accommodate more players this season The Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association (OMLA) will expand its programs this year to bet- ter accommodate the growing number of players in the town. The OMLA will add house league play to the girls field lacrosse program it introduced last year, as well as increasing the number of players in its midget boys division to ensure better bal- ance among teams and more fun for participants. Approximately 1,000 players are expected to register in the OMLA this year, an increase from about 700 players five years ago. The OMLA will also focus this year on further- ing its player development programs and intro- ducing a mentoring program for new house league coaches. Michael Varanesi takes over as OMLA presi- dent this year from Wally Tymkiv, who has been announced director of Zone 10 by the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Tymkiv remains on the OMLA board as past president, while wife Tanya the past registrar is now the registrar of Ontario Womens Lacrosse and will be the assistant director of the OMLAs Lady Hawks program. The association has a strong and experienced volunteer executive for 2011, but still welcomes volunteers at all levels of the game from peanut to midget, in house league and rep and to bolster the executive ranks. Volunteers would especially be appreciated to assist with registration days, the OMLAs house league championship tournament in June and in administrative roles. The Oakville Blades won two of three games last week, including a 4-2 victory Saturday over the Georgetown Raiders, to move into a tie with Georgetown for second place in the Ontario Junior Hockey League West Division standings. After stumbling to a 4-3 loss to the Brampton Capitals Thursday in their first game back from the Christmas break, the Blades whipped the Mississauga Chargers 10- 1 Friday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex before earning their second win in Georgetown in the last three weeks. Kyle Lysaght, Phil Hampton and Brandon Denham scored for Oakville in the loss to Brampton. The Blades outshot the Capitals 43-30 on the evening, but Brampton scored twice in the third period to pull out the win. Friday, Oakville got two goals from Tyler Karius, Kyle Blaney and Braedan Russell in a rout of the Chargers. Mark Bennett, Mark McGowan, Nick Rivait and Lysaght also tal- lied for the Blades, who fired 54 shots at the Mississauga net. Denham had three assists and James Prigione made 24 stops to record the easy victory. Bennett scored twice and Denham and Blaney added singles in the win over Georgetown, while Daniel Savelli stopped 24 of 26 shots. Oakville (26-12-1), which has a game in hand on the 25-12-3 Raiders, now sits 11 points behind the Burlington Cougars for top spot in the West. The Blades will try to narrow that gap tomorrow (Thursday), when they visit the Newmarket Hurricanes.
