Flamborough trio aims to impress at Sound of Music By Catherine O'Hara METROLAND WEST MEDIA The sky's the limit for Shanny and the Nannigans. After capturing Metroland's Best of the West title, the Flamborough trio is eager to take to the Burlington Sound of Music Festival stage this June a gig it won for receiving the most votes in the battle of the bands type contest. Then, Mitch and Will Thompson and their lifelong friend, Alex Carson, plan to work their way up to superstardom. "That's the dream, I think," said Alex, 21, of plans to one day leave his career as an electrical engineering technician to become a rock star. "I feel that where we are now, we are on that path," added 22-yearold Mitch. Since officially coming together as a band five months ago, Shanny and the Nannigans have written and recorded more than a half a dozen tunes, including This World, which received 46 per cent of the vote during the championship round of the contest, hosted in partnership by the Flamborough Review, Burlington Post, Oakville Beaver and Milton Canadian Champion. Thompson -- are excited to be performing at Burlington's Sound of Music Festival in June. The trio won the title of Metroland's Best of the West earlier this month. "They came through for us huge," said Alex. Shanny and the Nannigans are also forever grateful to their friend, Terri Hofland, who alerted the band to the contest. "If it wasn't for Terri, we wouldn't have signed up." Since their big win, they've been thinking of ways to perfect their folky sound in order to impress the masses during Burlington's Sound of Music Festival this summer. And they are thrilled that they will be jamming in the big leagues. "We are on the same bill as Bedouin Soundclash," said lead vocalist, Will, who also plays guitar and bass. "It's the highlight of our career," added Alex. But the band is banking on more successes in the near future. "We are doing pretty well for ourselves, especially since being together for, like, five months. Two years from now, where do you think we'll be?" asked Mitch. "Headlining the Sound of Music Festival," suggested Alex. Will had something even better in mind: a sold-out performance at the Air Canada Centre. Organ at Intrada Brass concert The brass and percussion players of Intrada Brass of Oakville will get some assistance at their upcoming Organic Brass concert on Sunday, March 25.
