Dreams come true at circus Gus McMillan on aerial silks and five tumblers from the Oakville Gymnastics Club: Michael Chaves, Jonathan Meehan, Ben Senior, Luke Mackinnon and Naomi Smith. Meehan, 19, is ranked Canada's top senior men's power tumbler and last fall represented Canada at the London World Championships in Birmingham, England. Meehan has been with the Oakville club for five years, where he made the switch to tumbling from artistic gymnastics, which he had begun at the Burlington BGs "I just needed something new," said Meehan. Tumblers are those amazing athletes who launch themselves into a series of spectacular flips and twists down a 35m rectangular power track. "It's pretty cool to watch. Lots of power, lots of agility," said Meehan. "I like the feeling when I'm in the air, when you hit zero gravity, there's no other feeling like it. "I like the prospects of being able to travel and meet all these very unique individuals and now Continued from page 1 getting the opportunity to be in a circus performance. I never thought I'd be able to do that before." Meehan trains 17 hours a week as well as coaches for the Oakville club and is "extremely excited" about his upcoming circus performance. "This has been my dream ever since being introduced to Cirque du Soleil. My dream has always been to join it, so being in this performance is a milestone for me in order to get to that. .. "It will help me become aware of how performances work, how the acting side of it works, not just the flipping side, not just the competitive side of it, but also the performance side, how to present yourself on stage." Ben Senior, 16, couldn't be happier that he returned to gymnastics after a brief hiatus. He now competes in the novice 15plus division travelling throughout Ontario and Québec. "This is the greatest sport," said Senior. "The greatest opportunity, everything that comes with it, the fitness, the life skills and co-ordination.
