By Kim Arnott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Women aim to inspire, motivate young girls ArcelorMittal Dofasco's materials engineer. "Our friends, our family, our teachers and our co-workers are frequently inspiring us and moulding us in ways we don't realize," she said. "Surround yourself with people you want to be inspired by and I'm sure you'll be successful, whatever career path you end up on." 9 · Wednesday, April 11, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com In a roomful of teenage girls, it was the silence that demonstrated how compelling the stories were. The silence fell as a tomboy, who became a nurse, explained how she then found a job that lets her wear a flight suit and ride a helicopter to remote corners of the province to look after sick children. The silence continued as a mother of four explained how classes full of boys had frightened her away from high school tech courses, how family obligations later discouraged her from learning a trade, but how she persevered and eventually trained to become a carpenter. And, that ominous silence continued as two young women explained how they were inspired to become small business owners with little knowledge of running a business. The stories came from women who agreed to share their experiences during the eighth annual Women as Career Coaches (WACC) evening organized by the Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) on March 29. Designed to inspire and motivate young women, the annual event links high school students from across the region with women working at various stages of their careers. More than 600 people attended this year's event, which allowed participants to connect At the end of the evening, students chatted excitedly about what they had heard. Grade 9 Acton student Zoe Palladine said the speakers encouraged her to consider a wide range of new career possibilities. "Every (career) they said, I thought to myself, `I could do that'," she said. While their career paths varied considerably, many of the speakers shared similar messages, encouraging the girls to find their passion, follow their dreams and persevere. Students also heard that mentors can appear in various guises, and aren't always older people working in the same industry. Ruth Breen, the mother and carpenter who launched her own company, Capstone Contracting, urged the young women to see themselves as potential mentors to others.
