Extra effort carries peewee 2 Hawks to Ontario D2 title The Oakville peewee 2 Hawks ensured they wouldn't be heartbroken again. A year after their first and only loss of the season eliminated them from the preliminary round of the provincial field lacrosse Division 1 championships, the Hawks went undefeated in five games to win the Ontario Division 2 crown recently in Brampton. Oakville defeated Whitby 5-3, tied St. Catharines 4-4 and downed Huntsville 9-6 in the round robin, doubled up Whitby 6-3 in the semifinals and dumped Caledon 7-3 in the championship game. Hawks coach Darin Kew expected nothing less this season of his charges, mostly first-year peewees who were Oakville's B team but nearly joined the peewee 1 Hawks (mostly second-year peewees) in Division 1 because of their success. "That's kind of unheard of, having two teams (from the same town) playing in the A division," said Kew, noting the Hawks remained in the 25-team Division 2 because of scheduling issues. Oakville made the most of it, earning the Division 2 provincial title largely because of desire and effort. "The kids on my team are coached by (Toronto Rock coach) Troy Cordingley in box lacrosse. It's the same group of kids. Troy and I both are adamant about loose balls," Kew said. "Nobody beats our team in loose balls. We kept stats this year, and against Whitby -- a perennial powerhouse -- we had six times as many loose balls as them. "You can't ask for any more effort than my kids put on the field," Kew added. "Their tongues were all hanging out by the end of the game." The team's success already has Kew eagerly looking ahead to next season. "From a parents' standpoint, they're expecting (Division 1) gold next year. From a coaching perspective, I don't see that as being a stretch," he said. "To win (Division 1) gold is a huge accomplishment. It means you're the best in Ontario and probably, considering most of my kids have played in the United States, you could be the best in the world." Members of the peewee 2 Hawks are Aden Walsh, Mark Sinclair, Grayden Power, Benjamin Sheehan, Jackson Ashby, Evan McHenry, William McAllister, Michael Jackman, Kyle Kachan, Cole Salmon, Matthew Hill, Vincent Milantoni, Alton McDermott, Bryce Cordingley, Kaiden Gilbert, Curtis Goddard, Justin Sykes, Ryan O'Hara, Matthew Wright and Jack Follows. Troy Cordingley and Bob Sykes also coach the team, Carmine Milantoni is the trainer and Heidi Follows is the manager. --Jon Kuiperij 21 · Thursday, June 28, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com D2 CHAMPIONS: The Oakville peewee 2 Hawks recently won the Ontario field lacrosse Division 2 title. Buzz shoots for first round sweep tomorrow A convincing win in Newmarket Tuesday moved the Oakville Buzz within one win of a sweep in its first-round Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B playoff series. The Buzz outscored the Newmarket Saints in each period to earn a 13-7 victory and take a 2-0 lead in the teams' best-of-five series. Oakville can advance to the second round with a victory in Game 3 tomorrow (Friday) at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, an 8 p.m. start. Todd Nakasuji (two goals, five assists), Mike Biergard (three goals, two assists) and Keyan McQueen (three goals) led the Buzz attack Tuesday. Sam Neeb and Greg Campgbell each added a goal and three assists, and Alex Whiffing contributed a goal and two helpers. Also scoring for Oakville were Ryan Cavanagh and Colton Watkinson. Ian Duffy earned the win in net. Should the Buzz advance to the second round, it would likely face the top seed in the East Conference, the Akwesasne Indians.
