Team up for 33rd annual Terry Fox Run The 33rd annual Oakville Terry Fox Run will be on Sept. 16 at Coronation Park. It has been 32 years since Terry Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean and embarked on his cross-Canada Marathon of Hope. Since Terry Fox's death in 1981 from osteosarcoma, the Terry Fox Run has grown to involve millions of participants in more than 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research. More than $500 million dollars has been raised worldwide in Terry's name to produce better treatments for many different types of cancers. Each September, thousands of Oakville residents come together at Coronation Park to honour Terry by participating in the local Terry Fox Run. This year's run will feature a number of new Oakville teams as part of an exciting initiative called Team Up For Terry. Teaming up for Terry is a special opportunity to come together to make a difference in the fight against cancer and to bond as families, friends, teammates and colleagues while showing your commitment to giving back. With no entry fee or minimum required donation, the only expectations are the ones you set for your organization as a Terry Fox Team Captain. There is no cost to form a team. One of Oakville's biggest and most successful past teams, Team Darrell, will be returning this year. Inspired by the late Darrell Atherley, in 2011, Team Darrell boasted more than 200 members and raised a record $40,000 for the Oakville event. New teams joining the 2012 Oakville Run include Team Ford of Canada, Team Oakville Hydro, Team Hopedale Mall, and Team Max, named for Ward 6 Town Councillor Max Khan, a three-time cancer survivor who is currently recovering from a relapse of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Led by Julie Millington, Team Oakville Hydro is excited to be part of such a special community event. "We here at Oakville Hydro are extremely proud to be supporting such a worthy cause," said Millington. "This is the first year Oakville Hydro has entered a team, and based on the enthusiasm that is building in our office, we anticipate this will become a regular event for us." Team Up For Terry is an initiative of the Terry Fox Foundation, encouraging members of the public to put together a team of friends, family, co-workers or teammates. Teams can be inspired by others, such as Team Darrell or Team Max, or as a way to involve your business in the event, like Ford of Canada, Oakville Hydro and Hopedale Mall. Teams can be as few as three people or as many as 200 or more. To form your own team, visit www.terryfox.org and click on the Team Up For Terry tab.
