www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, December 7, 2012 · 14 Town will do its due diligence and take a second look Continued from page 12 "They marched off to the Battle of York, which was on April 27, 1813. They were the first people to meet the Americans, the Kentucky Riflemen and the North Carolina Snipers, when they were landing. There were about eight natives killed that we know of in that battle and probably more died of wounds afterwards," said Whelan. "They fought in the war, they died in the war, they owned the land where the cenotaph is in Oakville during the War of 1812. They are the only people that should go on that cenotaph (in connection with the War of 1812)." Whelan is also calling for Trafalgar Township's Private Timothy Street, killed in action during the War of 1812, to be added to the Trafalgar Memorial and wants the slogan `To Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice' removed from the new George's Square Cenotaph wall. Whelan said `Made the Ultimate Sacrifice' is an American slogan and is therefore not appro- priate for the Canadian war memorial, particularly one featuring War of 1812 veterans. The Canadian dedication `Paid the Supreme Sacrifice' would be better, he said. Mark said the Town would look into all the concerns Whelan raised about the cenotaph. "We view the historical society as experts. They are historians and archivists so we used their research and information and included those couple of names on the wall," said Mark. "Now we have a gentlemen coming forward saying they shouldn't be there. We'll look at the information. We've shared it with the historical society and if those names shouldn't be on the wall, we'll take them off the wall. Right now, we do only have one gentlemen's opinion so we want to make sure we do our due diligence and do some research on that." Whelan is also calling on the Town to take a look at the new memorial walls dedicated to Oakville's First and Second World War veterans, stating similar problems exist here.
