Vol. 51 No. 8 "Using Communication To Build Better Communities" Humane society investigates dumped Persian cats By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An Oakville woman who found two abandoned Persian cats along Indian Ridge Trail in two days this week is hopeful whoever is responsible will be caught soon. Beth Koreska was walking her dogs -- Duke, a chocolate Lab, and Max, a golden retriever -- along the western portion of the trail, located between Third Line and Fourth Line, just north of the QEW, Monday morning when her dogs made the discovery. "Both dogs ran up the side of this hill and stopped and when I looked, there was this bright white, orange and black puffball on the side of the hill," said Koreska. "I was yelling at the dogs to get away and the thing just sat there, didn't move, didn't meow or anything." Koreska soon realized what she was seeing was a Persian cat curled up in a ball. Initially, Koreska said she wasn't sure if the cat was alive or dead, but then it opened its eyes and stared up at her. "Then it started meowing and meowing, it was just yelling and at first I wanted to collect this cat and put it in my sweater or something, it was freezing. There was frosty grass all around, it was so cold," she said. "I just felt so awful about this." While Koreska said she has no idea how long the cat was outdoors, she noted the cat's fur was severely matted. The cats were found curled in a ball and not moving. Koreska later learned this breed, when faced with cold temperatures will usually curl up, not move and eventually starve. The two cats found are pictured in the insets above.
