Plans no good if there's no cash to pay for them: Carr Continued from page 4 7 · Friday, January 18, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com 403), Georgetown South Project and the Union Station -- Train Shed Revitalization. The next round of projects will use the remaining $34 billion, which is the largest investment ever made in Canada for transportation, according to McCuaig. "It is one that translates into an enormous infusion into the economy of this region and creates 900,000 new jobs for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area," said McCuaig. While Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff thinks the idea of a roundtable discussion is great, she is disappointed that The Big Move excluded bicycles as a mode of transportation to get people to and from the GO train. "The focus needs to move away from just the GO train to include local transit, cycling, walking (and) all of the other things that get people to the GO trains," said Damoff. One of the projects included in the next phase of The Big Move is the Dundas Street Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), which will consist of 40 kilometres of new dedicated bus rapid transit lanes stretching from Brant Street in Burlington to Kipling GO Station in Toronto. Along the route, stops will be made in Burlington, Oakville and Mississauga. Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr noted the Region recently finished conducting the environmental assessments for the Dundas BRT. According to Carr, Halton will get $69 million from the Province for the project. Construction will begin in the "next year or GRAHAM PAINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog moving along: Metrolinx President and CEO Bruce McCuaig speaks to approximately 80 people at the Halton Regional Centre Tuesday as Metrolinx held the first of 12 public roundtable meetings across Ontario to talk about its Big Move plan to tackle gridlock and improve transportation. e two," Carr said, adding the Oakville portion of the transit line should be completed by the time the new hospital opens. The entire BRT is expected to be completed and operational by 2018. "By having these services, it's not only good for our people to get around, it's (also) an economic development. If we have this good infrastructure in place with a good transportation and transit network, it will also help draw jobs to the Halton Region," said Carr. He would also like to see an upgrade and electrification of the Lakeshore West GO train line to provide faster service. Carr stated there is potential to have train service every 15 minutes. But Carr is concerned about funding and how the projects will be paid for because "the Province has no money and the federal government is broke," he said. "They all have deficits (and) all of these things won't matter if you don't have the finances to pay for them. The big thing we're going to try to hear from Metrolinx is how to pay for it," said Carr. "All of these projects will sit on the shelf if there is no money to pay for them." Going forward, Carr will continue to meet with McCuaig and other government officials and ministers to discuss the progress of The Big Move. "It's so important to make sure we get our needs known to the people of Metrolinx and to the board when they're making their decision." Comments from all the roundtable discussions will be included in Metrolinx's investment strategy, which will be distributed to the Province and municipalities by June 1.
