Little League introduces changes for 2013 season Now that spring is officially here, Oakville Little League is encouraging local youngsters to prepare to trade in their hockey sticks for baseball bats. Since the end of last baseball season, OLL executive and volunteers have been busy preparing and making improvements for the 2013 season. "We are really proud of what we do here, but we don't sit on our past success. We work hard to improve the baseball experience and enjoyment for all players, whether they are four or 20 years old," said OLL president John Sweeney. The winter has been filled with registrations, meetings with the Town, winter clinics, Family Day events and more as OLL strives to continue providing fun and family-oriented baseball to local youth. OLL will continue to offer house league tournaments this season for Minor and Major divisions. The popular end-of-season Gala Days will return for T-ballers. The most anticipated event of the year might be Blue Jays Day in June, when more than 800 OLL players and family members are expected to attend a Toronto Blue Jays home game. In other events, OLL baseball camps will return in July, and the league will participate once again in the Pepsi Pitch, Hit & Run competition. Over the past couple of years, OLL has introduced several new initiatives. The league is now the official home of baseball for Autistic youth in Halton, and the new modified Minor A division will return this season to help youngsters make a smooth transition to live pitching. The Big League division was successful in its inaugural year last season and will return again, with registration ahead of last year's pace. Among changes for this year will be the addition of exhibition games in Minor and Major division play, designed to ensure more parity. OLL will also hold free clinics on weekends throughout the summer to help coaches and players improve their skills. In the Junior division, the distance between bases has been changed from 90 feet to the appropriate 80. The Whitecaps All-Star program has also undergone significant administrative change, altering the way managers and players are selected to the team. A third annual tournament -- the Canada Day Classic for junior and SOBA bantam teams -- has been added to the OLL schedule. For more information or to register for the upcoming season, consult the OLL website at www.ollb.org.
