Letters to the Editor 9 | Wednesday, April 24, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Resident asks Town to do better Mayor assures replacement plan in place continued from p.6 process is that? The Town planning staff helpfully conceded that based on all the various options discussed, it should have been made clear that any plan being considered would almost certainly involve the clear-cutting of the space, save for trees on the borders ( apparently these total 138 trees). But this was not made clear, therefore the public was inclined to believe that the draft plan would go forward without change. However disappointing the result of this process was to many people, I hope we can agree that a public consultation process that yields an end-result radically different than the only plan communicated to the public as `approved,' is a flawed and indeed counter-productive process. So, in the opinion of almost all residents I have consulted, the result is horrific, and the process is broken or counter-productive. I hope that our Ward 2 councillors and Your Worship will assure the citizens of Oakville that, for the benefit of all Oakville citizens, the consultation process and follow-through with stakeholders will be dramatically improved for all future development applications. I will leave comments on the very important `content issue' of tree protection, achievement of the canopy target and status quo of the `replacement has been the best available tool we have' response to people with more expertise in these matters. My only comment is we can, and should, do better if we truly believe in a Livable Oakville. Hart Jansson, Oakville Editor's Note: The corresponding letter from Mayor Rob Burton. The tree changes are as per the approved plan, which will see an increase to the tree cover from what was there before. Our 40 per cent target is on track. Perhaps we need a better way to assure that we remember what we've approved as the often quite drawn out redevelopment process unfolds. I know that on the morning of the site alteration, I visited and was taken aback until I checked and found the replacement plan is in place. To improve our access to that information, staff have told me they will do a better job of keeping active development projects related documents current and available on www.oakville.ca. I'm happy to discuss any ideas for improvement at any time. For now, replacement has been the best available tool we have. Please let me know whenever I may be of assistance.
