Photos by Inger MacKenzie/Metroland Media Group First free-standing A&W in Oakville in 40 years In 1956, the first A&W drive-in restaurant in Canada opened, serving a delicious combination of great-tasting burgers, onion rings and frosted mugs of famous A&W Root Beer®--all from the smiling faces of friendly car hops--A&W proved to be an instant hit. A&W Restaurants quickly multiplied across the nation, flourishing through the late `50s and `60s. Since then, A&W has continued to grow, expanding into more than 700 locations from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, and now Mike and Kathy Mihaichuk along with their operating partners Peter and Kendra Hobbes have opened Oakville's first free standing A&W in 40 years. The Mihaichuks and Hobbes are a big part of the continued expansion of the brand in Ontario. The operating partnership currently operate five stores in Ontario and plan to open another 10 in the next five years, however, the Oakville store holds a special place for the operators. The Mihaichuk and Hobbes families have been dedicated community residents in Oakville for 25 years. They have participating in volunteer organizations such as the Oakville Rangers and Hornets hockey associations, the Kinsmen Minor Baseball program and several other community youth organizations. In addition, the Hobbes have had a long term special volunteer relationship and commitment to the Glen Abbey United Church congregation and through their daughter Sam, Dog Guides of Canada, an organization based in Oakville that provides a nationwide community service. Mike and Peter have also been long term members of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, one of the most thriving chambers in the province.
