Jonathan’s Of Oakville not only had a great time on the links 'at their charity golf tournament, but they also raised more than $3,000 for the Child Witness Preparation Program, a specialized service available to children and families throughout Halton. Not even the rain could dampen the enthusiasm. “It was a wonderful event,” said Jason Alikakos, general manager of the local fine dining establishment. Jonathan Alikakos Sr. managed to show that his talents do not lie solely in fine dining as he led the way on many of the fundraising holes and in fact he won the Closest to the BBQ challenge. “If we can have an afternoon out with friends and family and help the kids at the same time, I think that’s just great,” he said. He paid tribute to all the local sponsors, in particular Oak-Land Ford for providing a Lincoln LS for the Hole In One contest, and all the people and volunteers who helped out on Sunday, saying, ‘This is what it’s all about â€" the children.” Jonathan Alikakos Jr. made his mark on this family effort by not only coming up with the idea for the charitable event but also achieving the longest drive of the day â€" a big 370 yard smack. He then donated his prize back to be auctioned off. “I’d love to see this become an annual event,” said Jon Jr., adding, “It will only grow and help even more. I’m sure.” The charity golf tourney was part of a unique summer golf program called ‘Playing to Win for Special Needs Kids’, supported by sponsors host restaurants and businesses, which, in turn, is supporting the ongoing Bear Hour Heart Campaign. That campaign is on track, this year, to reach its projected goal of $150,000 in both Halton and Peel. This includes the very successful Restaurant and Corporate Challenges, Greeting Card Campaign and Festive Tour that takes place through November and December each year. But the program specifically supported by the Jonathan’s Of Oakville golf tourney was the Child Witness Preparation Program for Halton, one of the many programs supported by The Bear Your Heart Campaign. The Child Witness Preparation Program provides an education program for children objectively explaining the court process, the role of the witness, the importance of telling the truth in court, who the people are in the courtroom and what they do. Participants do not speak about the evidence to be given in court. In fact, it is one of the program rules that evidence must not be discussed. The aim of the program is to provide children/youth with emotional support, stress reduction and education about court procedures. Kelso will be overrun by bikers this weekend After being absent from the Ontario Cup race scene for one year, Kelso is back with a whole new event this weekend (July 28-30th). For the first time ever, Kelso will be running its own race and investing in the sport of mountain biking by directing a portion of the funds raised from the event toward continued trail development and maintenance in the park. All ready to ride is the challenging Kelso ‘X-Treem’ trail, at the south end of the trail system â€" it's very technical, and definitely not for the faint of heart. The courses for the Kelso Ontario Cup 2000 take on a new attitude as well. Mike Badyk, of Wizard of Wheels Ltd., is showing no mercy in his outrageous new course design. Downhillers will be thrilled with the fast and gnarly new course west of the Digger Downhill, as well as the chair lift ride to the top of the breathtaking escarpment. Cross country racers are in for a treat with lots of new wild single track and the unique start/finish at the top of the hill â€" Kelso’s Summit Entrance. Registration forms and more information can be picked up at the park, or found online at www.wowmtb.com. Early registration closed on Monday. Event dates are July 28th, 29th and 30th â€" refer to registration form for event specifics. On-site camping is available. Call 878-5011 ext. 244 to reserve a site. To find the main entrance to Kelso Conservation Area, follow the signs from Hwy. 25 north of Hwy. 401 to Campbellville Road west on Campbellville Road to Tremaine Road and south to Kelso Road. The park entrance is west of Tremaine on Kelso Road. (Race participants should refer to their registration form for directions to the Summit Gate entrance for Sunday's race.) Athletiques track and field dub: summer championships Fourteen-year-old Matthew Jakubowicz proved a long-espoused theory of Athletiques International Track and Field Club coach Bruce Burton at this year's District 'B' Legion Championships; you don't have to constantly practice an event to make large improvements in it. At Crystal Beach High School in Ridgeway, the second-year member of the local club added 20 centimetres to his outdoor best in the high jump, winning the 15-and-under boys event with a Personal Record (P.R.) of 1.68m, despite not having jumped over a bar since April. In a new event, for him, he earned silver with a P.R. toss at 2458m in the discus. Athletiques managed to sweep all three medals in the high jump, with Shaphan Reed, 15, second at a P.R. of 1.50m, and Kevin Fisher, 13, third at 1.40m. Reed took home matching silver medals, as he also finished second in the 1500m, with a P.R. of 4:52.51. Fisher was seventh in the same race with a P.R. of 5:17.87. On the Eastern Front, six-year-old Jessie Rotrand came home from the Ontario Minor Track Association Championships with three P.R.'s, as well as a bronze medal and a sixth-place ribbon, at Oshawa's Civic Field. The medal came in Mite girls shot-put, at 2.54m, in an event won by an eight-year-old. with the ribbon being picked up for finishing sixth in the 400m (1:40.2). She was also 10th in long jump, at 2.46m. The local club trains year-round, with coaching available in any event. If interested, please phone Bruce Burton at 630-TRAK (8725). Gatquatic Divers: at the tier two provincial championships A 17-member Gatquatic Divers contingent finished second overall, out of nine teams, at the recent Ontario tier two championships, hosted by the Scarborough Diving Club. The members, primarily from Burlington and Oakville, hauled home seven gold, five silver and two bronze medals. Here’s how the Oakville divers fared (all one the one-metre board): Level three, girls 11 and under Chelsea Leggat 1st Level three, girls 12/13: Melissa Melia 1st, Rachel Pedros 2nd, Jennifer McCoppen 9th. Level three, girls 14/15: Kelly Good 4th. Level two, girls 12/13: Katie Quinlan 7th. Bronte Harbour Yacht Club hosts annual sailing school for the visually impaired (Continued Irom page D3) vacation they ever get. Many are isolated.” Several years ago a race was added to the final day of the program. To alert participants to impending obstacles, buoys are rigged with a sound system, the only compromise in a race that is organized as any other club competition. Students steer, hoist and change the sails. “We are there only as a pair of eyes so they don’t get into trouble,” said Opitz. Greenwood continued to sail after he “gradually” lost his sight, and with David Brown, hopes to participate in the World Wide Sailing Championships (for the visually impaired) in Italy in 2002. Diana Czainski returned to the sailing school for her second year because of the fun and friendships. Being forced to sail using a compass in high winds was very similar to sailing when she could see, smiled Czainski. Guaranteed when the sign requesting volunteers goes up next summer, there will be new people wanting to sign up. “When the week is finished they want to know where they can sign up for next year,” said Opitz.
